The Jose Rizal Legacy

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda’s legacy is almost forgotten by Filipinos and most especially the youth these days. But what is Jose Rizal’s Legacy to us? Rizal was a different person to different people. He traveled the world, not only as a mere Official Filipino Tourist at the time but one who learned from the different places he has been and left even a mark there.

Dr. Jose P. Rizal is the Philippine’s National Hero. He was born June 18, 1861 and died by firing squad at Luneta Bagumbayan in December 30, 1896. He is academician, a linguist, writer, historian, scientist and a doctor. He studied in Ateneo de Manila , University of Santo Thomas, Universidad Central de Madrid, Paris and Germany. In a way, he was also an activist, a reformist, a non-violence rebel and an advocate of peace.

A man who changed the course of Philippine history, he influenced most of our revolutionary leaders through his writings and example. I remember taking up a “Rizal” subject in highschool’s social studies and history and also a course in college, which was a requirement in order for us to graduate in college. At that time, I was somewhat disinterested due to the same thing being talked and presented about him over and over again. I believe one semester of a subject is not enough to fully understand and grasp the life and achievements of Jose Rizal. Other nations even recognizes his achievements, there are even Jose Rizal Monuments in Madrid, Sweden, Singapore and many more aside from what we have in Luzon. There is even a research group/center in singapore dedicated to researchin Jose Rizal's life.

“Not only is Rizal the most prominent man of his own people but the greatest man the Malayan race has produced. ” -Ferdinand Blumentritt, 1897.

My interest in him was re-ignited when I attended a seminar of “The Brown Raise Movement.” Which was basically one of the tipping points in my pursuit of not only excellence but also as my identity as a Filipino. He basically became my role model again after that seminar. Hands down, as per personal excellence he got it, no need to mention his many professions. But his love for his country and people is so much more remarkable, truly he was a man ahead of his time. I would even go far as to say he is even ahead of “our” time now.

If Rizal were to live today, aside from his professions at the time, he will definitely be a blogger, a pro-blogger at that. His stand on education and values would be very much applicable even today. He valued education so much that the education of Filipinos and their achievement of a national identity were prerequisites to achieve freedom. So with that, no wonder we are still in the third world having to give no significant importance to our youth’s education and at the same time the destruction of our own culture.

As Barth Suretsky, an American expat who lived and died in the Philippines said, the fundamental thing wrong with this country is a lack of pride in being Filipino. “ All Filipinos want to be something else. The poor ones want to be American, and the rich ones all want to be Spaniards. Nobody wants to be Filipino.” No pride, no identity, no recollection of his glorious past that can project him in leading the future of his country. “A people without a sense of history is a people doomed to be unaware of their own identity.”

The Philippines is currently the world’s leading exporter of nurses, with 164,000 or 85% of the country’s trained nurses are working abroad, with doctors becoming nurses. Add to that the other OFWs who are non nurses. And in 2006, the National Career Assessment Examination showed that out of the 1.3 million examinees, only 3.7%, or 49,066 students, are fit to enter college. The Philippines is No. 41 in Science and No. 42 in Mathematics among 45 countries. We reflect and reinvent ourselves in order to even think of achieving progress for our country and our fellow citizens. We must not succumb to the situation which forces us to go the easy way and work abroad rather than developing our nation’s Human Capital and overall capability. I remember the heart-wrenching dream of Rizal in El Filibusterismo:
“Where are the youth who will CONSECRATE their budding years, their idealism and enthusiasm to the welfare of their country? Where are the youth who will generously pour out their blood to wash away so much shame, so much crime, so much abomination? Pure and spotless must the victim be, that the sacrifice may be acceptable! Where are you, youth, who will embody in yourselves the vigor of life that has lifted our veins, the purity of ideas that has been contaminated in our hearts? We await you, O youth! Come, for we await you!”

The Filipino Youth in which he describes as the Hope for the motherland should take power and create a revolution of new ideas and inspiration to do away with the corrupt and ridiculously ineffective ways that the so-called adults are doing to run this country. We should take note of the path taken by Rizal in achieving his enduring legacy. And while he was among the most educated and best qualified to lead an emerging Philippine nation, he did not fight for any leadership post.

Instead he focused on self-improvement, showing to Spain and the rest of the international community that, given the opportunity to achieve their full potential, Filipinos could stand alongside the best in the world and were eligible for self-rule. Then he set out to apply what he had learned as an ophthalmologist, providing a basic service that was badly needed by his impoverished compatriots. In his writings he emphasized the importance of education, seeing it as the path to national progress rather than armed revolt.

He also had a religious side to him, in his letter to his mother, he somehow affirms what many theologians always taught, namely, reason and faith need not be seen as contradictory: "What I believe now, I believe through reason because my conscience can admit only what is compatible with the principles of thought . . . For me, religion is most sacred, most pure, most sublime, which shuns all human adulterations; and I believe that I would fail in my duty as a rational being were I to prostitute my reason and accept an absurdity. I believe that God would not punish me if in approaching him, I were to use his most precious gift of reason and intelligence. I believe that the best way for me to honor him is to present myself before him making use of the best things that he has given me . . ."

And in conclusion:

“Alas! The whole misfortune of the present Filipinos consists in that they have become only half-way brutes. The Filipino is convinced that to get happiness it is necessary for him to lay aside his dignity as a rational creature, to attend mass, to believe what is told him…without aspiring anything…without protesting against any injustice…any insult… that is, not to have heart, brain, or spirit; a creature with arms and a purse of gold. . . there’s the ideal native!.”(The Indolence of the Filipinos by José Rizal, 1890)

Would you believe, if you reflect long enough that the quotation from Rizal more than a hundred years ago clearly defines our situation today? What we need to carry on in the years to come from the life of rizal are: 1) a life of honor and integrity; 2) a passion to excel; 3) the achievement of dreams and aspirations; 4) respect and love for parents; 5) use of God given talents; and 6) love and pride for the Filipino race.

Rizal’s short life offers many lessons in achieving national progress. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

Why I don't need a Christmas Wishlist

Why I don't need a Christmas Wishlist? Do you think I have gone crazy? well not really..The reason as to Why I don't need a Christmas Wishlist is very long but I'll list it down below. But first, let me talk about this recent christmas or holiday season.

Everybody celebrates the holidays differently. There really is no right or wrong way to spend the holiday season from September to cold December days and nights January and eventually february. Most think, that its only up to December or January but for me its up to February. September marks the start of the “Ber” holidays season where in you can spot the selling of Christmas decors such as pampanga lanterns and the like. I can even remember that in McDonalds, their music is already playing Christmas related songs.

By November, some people start off their reunions (some prefer November during the honoring of the dead and others by December for gift giving) and even some companies have early Christmas parties towards the end of November to since most of people’s schedules are eaten up by December Christmas party invites.

Filipinos will open their hearts and doors to friends who are unfortunate enough to not have a holiday party of their own and sometimes it becomes overwhelming as one’s social circle grows. For some, like myself, who don’t fancy large gatherings or the commercial nature of Christmas most of the time; prefer to just relax under the night’s sky stargazing or maybe spend time with the people I care about, maybe spend the season volunteering and helping the less fortunate.

I believe Christmas has become lost or has changed due to influences from different cultures. Even the Japanese, Chinese and some middle-eastern folks have adopted the Christmas season with their own ways. Some people are Saints with gifts but Scrooge-like with their time, and some are the opposite. There are party animals and faithful churchgoers. My dad who is working abroad told me to go do and join misa de gallo tradition since its only in Christmas you can do that. To be honest, I was annoyed, I am a Christian and I have learned that God gave us this free-will for his greater glory. I simply don’t want to be a robot who blindly follow stuff just because it has been practiced & done for hundreds of years.

I have read an article in the newspaper that some go to see mass or even these dawn mass traditions to meet their “Ka-date,” some are forced (maybe not briefed properly by their parents on why they are doing such a thing), some sleep while there, some daydream since they are sleepy, some go to church but smoke outside church just to stay awake, some even will go far as to say that it is a Christian’s duty to do so. Please stop with those ridiculous reasons (well let’s just say that I can’t say it in front of their faces so that’s why I’m blogging), it’s really annoying, one’s relationship with God is personal and I do practice it my own way. So if you go to Misa De Gallo for tradition sake, do you not listen or remember even the word/good news of that mass? And then have the courage afterwards to live and practice the word of the lord? Well it maybe not true for some people but this is just based on raw observation.

I worked on Christmas eve and on Christmas day since call centers are like that. It was really annoying and rewarding in a way since it was my 1st time working on a major holiday. When going to work and while trying to go to work at night, I saw a different side of cebu. Since it was the eve, there were fewer people on the streets. But I was totally shocked when I saw lots of children and adults sleeping on the sidewalks on CHRISTMAS EVE. That made me realize in some ways I was a bit selfish on the months leading to December and that made me reflect a lot. So here is why I don’t need a Christmas Wishlist for myself:

Good Health
I'm still alive? ehehehe
Small achievements and success
Thankful for my family, for they are still with me
A very blessed year with full of new experiences and firsts
Thanks to my fans and friends and of the new bonds I have created
For the gifts I have received, even if didn't get that many my 2009 life was great
Met more or around 200 people which has one way or another amused or touched my life
I am thankful for the problems & mistakes, without them I will not be the me of today
And all the other things in this good earth!

I believe it is time to stop concentrating on norms and traditions, and focus instead on the message of the holidays: a celebration of hope for a better future, a time to count blessings, and an opportunity to show and give love to friends and strangers alike. That is easier said than done, but I tried anyways. Everyone celebrates differently, and those who don’t stick with the status quo are looked down on. But if you see what I see, you’d probably think twice.

I Choose Hibari Kyoya Cosplay!

I choose Hibari Kyoya as my cosplay character for our company costume party. Hibari Kyoya is a character for the manga/anime, Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Hibari Kyoya is head of the Namimori Middle School Disciplinary Committee and is a violent delinquent who uses his status to harass other students. Hibari prefers to be alone and cares little for his subordinates. Kyoya’s catchphrase is "I'll bite you to death" (kamikorosu), which he says to everyone whom he is ready to fight. Hibari is very proud of his school, and is apparently the only person who likes their school's anthem, even using it as his ring tone.

It has been noted that Hibari is exactly like the first Vongola Cloud Guardian. The first Cloud Guardian had been the head of a country's secret intelligence division, never stood alongside the Family, hardly got along with anyone, and preferred being alone. However, he and Vongola Primo had one thing in common that allowed them to work together, in that they defeated the most enemies and were benevolent to comrades.

Hibari's tonfa have also been shown to have hidden compartments containing other weapons. In the future, he has a box weapon which contains another pair of tonfa which emit Dying Will Flames. The Hibari Kyoya version I chose to follow is the Adult/Future version.

The next post will be showing the event/cosplay itself of Hibari Kyoya (Future/Adult)! So make sure to be disciplined when you are in my presence, or else, I will Bite you to Death!

Christmas Holidays Stress

Have you ever experienced Christmas Holidays Stress? Well if there is such a thing as a Christmas Holidays Stress, I am experiencing it for the first time in my life! Add to that a Christmas Rant blog post!

Christmas Parties:
Christmas parties conflicting more than before- CBS Party, Company/Work party, Friends', Family = waaaaa

Holidays Events:
From Mall SALE to random events from various industries or niches = Cosplay, Band/Concert, Wedding, Launchings, and the like.

Backlogs:
This the time of the year where in the backlogs creep up on you. While for some people, its ok for me its not. I believe that I must settle everything before the year ends in order to start anew for the upcoming new year!

Budgetary:
Being in the Real-Professional world, I am now feeling the ridiculous pressures of Responsibilities. My sister has a ridiculously high tuition fee, house expenses, wants and needs. Not to mention the temptations everywhere to spend money. Hence the increasing desire to make more money!

Work-related:
Although my work is relatively low-stress by my standards, I am still only human and I let the foreigners get the best of me. Also, there goes my first theme party, with the pressure for working on the holidays for the first time. Add to that the increasingly constraining requirement to conform to company standards and policies.

Traditions:
Christmas traditions, from chinese, to german and filipino! Kris Kringle, Decorations and the related stuff. I don't wanna mention it cause its gonna make my head blow up.

Promos and contests:
In a business perspective, this is good to drive up sales and profits but in a professional's perspective, it sucks the money in your pockets dry.

Opportunities and loss:
My mind has the ridiculous knack to generate random great ideas in such the wrong time. I can see a bunch of opportunities showing up right in front of me and yet I cant acquire them all (Sponsored posts, online opps. and non-online opps)

Hahay..hopefully I can get through all of this...so much for my Christmas

Golden Cowrie Socialization

Our team had our first outing or socialization in our workplace (BPO firm). I think it was just my second time to step foot in that Golden Cowrie restaurant branch. Any way I had a great "short" time nonetheless.

We had ordered some 3 dishes: Crispy Pata (I think), fried tuna, and some soup (damnit I forgot the name!) and some iced tea plus rice.

I didn't like really like the fried tuna thing despite looking tasty. (note to self: tuna should be cooked like other seafood are cooked - whatever that means).

I just munched on the only meat dish and of course the soup. I'm not really good at remembering things that I've eaten for the first time but rest assured next time I'll definitely take notes.

Mga kuyug nga gikuraw pud: Simon, Tucker & Brianna - Hahay American Names!!!

What is RAN Online?

RAN Online is an MMORPG with a unique premise. RAN Players take on the roll of students in one of three rival universities and must compete with one another while surviving on campuses filled with possessed AI enemies. Unfortunately, the gameplay in Ran is not as original as the theme. The classes and combat style in the game are nearly identical to the standard fantasy MMORPGs currently available. Even though Ran Online has only recently resurfaced in the West, it has the disadvantage of being an older game and thus suffering from poor visuals and grind based progression.

Classes in RAN Online:

Shaman – These students use wands to channel the spiritual energy known as Qi to heal and buff their allies. Shamans may also specialize to use Spears.
Brawler - Melee fighters who have shunned all weapons in favor of unarmed combat.
Archer - Mastering the bow requires high agility and dexterity. Students may chose to use either the short bow or long bow.
Swordsman - Formidable warriors who must be both strong and agile. Swordsman can specialize in ‘blades’ or ‘broadswords.’

RAFI's 5th Triennial Awards

(RAFI) Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. has launched the 5th Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Triennial Awards for the Visayas and Mindanao at Casa Gorordo Museum, Parian, Cebu City last December 3, 2009. The Triennial Awards honors those who become instrument in changing the lives of the less-privileged.

The Triennial Awards started since 1996 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of RAFI in 1966. And because majority of the awards given in the Philippines have gone to individuals and organizations based in Luzon, RAFI focuses to the Visayas and Mindanao regions where many outstanding individuals and organizations should also be recognized, rewarded, promoted and acknowledged in the visayas and mindanao.

The Triennial Awards for exemplary individual and outstanding institution in the Visayas and Mindanao, is an initiative of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. to recognize noteworthy individuals & institutions and to encourage them who through their efforts that bring about hope and change for the betterment of the lives of the less privileged--reflect the philanthropic, humanitarian and holistic ideals of Don Ramon and Don Eduardo Aboitiz.

It is truly inspiring to hear the achievements of exemplary individuals and their best practices. I was there during the 4th Triennial Awards: Leaders of Change Summit which showcased the nominees and showed their efforts in various break-out sessions throughout the day.

Deadline of nomination is on July 16, 2010 and you may download the the form onf RAFI-Triennial Awards Webpage. See you in the 5th Triennial Awards Summit in 2010!

Intosan Resort Hotel And Restaurant Waterpark and Family Fun Village

I had a fun in weird ways when my team at my workplace crashed Intosan Resort Hotel And Restaurant Waterpark and Family Fun Village at around 11am on my first rest day from a ridiculously stressful week. That's quite a mouthful for a name of a place. It was my first time stepping foot in danao where Intosan Resort Hotel And Restaurant Waterpark and Family Fun Village is located. Most of the time, I just passed but danao on my previous trips going to the northern parts of cebu province. But I had a good time in Intosan Resort Hotel And Restaurant Waterpark and Family Fun Village.

They have a Kids Wading Pool which has a blue whale, a sitting duck, two silly turtles, three spewing chicks, three ranging umbrellas and dozens of lemon drops bring plenty of fantasy and water fun for kids. Only a few inches of water, but enough to get wet and feel like you're in the ocean. They also have the Malingin-Linaw Falls which is a winding slide is incorporated in this three story falls. Complete also with Dolphin sculptures, sea horse fountains and water geysers.... Sit or relax at the sitting coves located every so often along the whole length of the pool

For me, Intosan Resort Hotel And Restaurant Waterpark and Family Fun Village has still a long way to go and one can see that some areas or parts of the place that needs to be developed or expansion plans. "pang family-children ra gyud and appeal sa place, I mean purely for ligo-ligo, chillx2 and picnic pero para sa mga batan-on sama sa akong mga kauban, di jud pwede kay bawal ang tagay....(sa katong mahilig og tagay looy)....pero overall nindot cya...ug wala diay silay videoke."

Location: Taboc Danao City 6000; Telephone No. (63)(32) 200-3476; Fax Number (63)(32) 200-3476; Email Address: admin@intosanresort.com; Or for more info regarding Intosan Resort Hotel And Restaurant Waterpark and Family Fun Village features and amenities, you may visit there site HERE.
